(DOBSON, NC)  — More than 50 teachers and administrators joined together Feb. 12 to discuss the growing number of students with unhealthy risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.

The Surry County Schools Board of Education, along with these teachers and administrators, recognize that it is important for students to maintain their physical health and maintain proper nutrition in order to take advantage of educational opportunities. They further recognize that wellness is directly related to well-being, growth, development and readiness to learn. In a commitment to providing a school environment that promotes student wellness, proper nutrition, nutrition education and regular physical activity as part of the total learning experience, the board of education continues to challenge educators to seek ways to teach students about healthier lifestyles.

Don Puckett, a consultant, led the group to teach it ways to keep students active. Author of “Playing It S.A.F.E.,” Puckett is a master teacher with an enthusiastic and compassionate approach to education. He has 38 years of experience in education as a teacher, coach, athletic director and administrator. Puckett also produced two award-winning line dancing videos titled “Line Dancing Is It” and “User Friendly Line Dancing” and also designed the “Don Puckett Aerobic Tinikling Cords.”

As one of the multiple literacies of the 21st Century classroom, the board of education’s objective is to focus on physical health by supporting new initiatives to promote healthier lifestyles. Engaging in focused conversations about healthier student lifestyles, several groups such as the district’s curriculum committee and the district’s School Health Advisory Council continue to plan, implement and monitor health and nutrition issues within the school system.

“Within two hours, we learned numerous new games, line dances and activities to keep our students active during physical education classes,” said Misty Bruner, health and physical education teacher at East Surry High School. “I feel rejuvenated and am excited about returning to class to share what I learned with students.”
